The Mermaid
Beneath the waves, a whole kingdom
Beneath the waves, among coloured reefs, there lived a girl named Sara.
The reef used to glow at night. Everyone found their way by its light.
Until one night the light grew faint. Then fainter. Then it was gone.
Everyone searched the shallow water. Because it was close. And easy.
But Sara was looking down. Where the water was dark. Where no one had gone.
They told her: do not go down there. She said: then who will?
And Sara went down. The cold grew. The light thinned.
For a moment she could see nothing. She stopped, and heard her own heart, and kept going.
And there, in the sand, she found it. The pearl that lit the whole reef.
Sara rose with it held close. And the sea lit behind her, little by little.
The light came back to the reef. And everyone found their way again.
Sara slept with the light above her. The one who goes deep is the one who brings the light back.
