Fahad
Friend of the Animals
In the jungle, everyone knows them

In a green jungle that never ends, every animal knew a boy named Fahad.

He never frightened them. He would sit, and be quiet, and listen.

Fahad ran between the trees, monkeys racing overhead, birds whistling behind.

Until he heard a sound he had never heard. The sound of being afraid.

A small elephant, his leg beneath a fallen trunk. His mother could not lift it alone.

Fahad pushed. Nothing moved. He pushed again. Nothing moved.

He sat down to breathe. Alone, he could not. And that was his first right thought.

Fahad stood and called out. He called everyone.

The monkeys came, and the elephants, and the birds. And Fahad said: together. Now.

And the trunk lifted. And the small elephant was free.

The whole jungle became one sound. And Fahad in the middle of it, laughing.

From that day, whenever something went wrong, the animals called for one person. They called for Fahad.
